Alleged armed robbery at Socastee Dollar General Store lot lands two in jail
Feb 06, 2013 (The Sun News (Myrtle Beach - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Two Myrtle Beach area men are being held on charges in connection with a purse snatching of a woman in a Dollar General parking lot in the Socastee community, according to authorities.
Mitchell Deuntae Durgin, 21, and Quentin Jamal Johnson, 18, both of Myrtle Beach, were each charged with armed robbery and strong armed robbery in connection with the incident that occurred Sunday at 5028 Dick Pond Road, according to authorities.
Durgin also was charged with another count of armed robbery and receiving stolen goods, according to records at J. Reuben Long Detention Center. The men, who were each arrested Monday, are being held pending bond hearings.
The charges stemmed from a 28-year-old Myrtle Beach area woman calling police at 8 p.m. Sunday to report a man came from the woods, pointed a handgun at her, took her purse and then tried to force her into her vehicle, according to the police report.
The victim said she screamed and tried to get away from the man, who ripped out some of her hair during the struggle, according to the report. The suspect ran into the wooded area after the woman screamed for help.
Officers tracked the woman's cellphone to a nearby apartment complex in the Rittenhouse Road area and found Durgin there, according to the report. Officers also questioned a 16-year-old boy, but released him even though Durgin told police he received the victim's phone from the teen.
Durgin told police that the teen gave him the phone and asked him to unlock it, according to the report. The teen told police he was at the apartment complex with his girlfriend, who was visiting someone.
A person living in the apartment told police that Durgin had arrived about 10 minutes before officers asking for help in unlocking the phone, according to the report.
It was unclear how police took Johnson into custody.
