Police investigate Wellborn Elementary break-in
Feb 01, 2013 (The Anniston Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Someone broke into Wellborn Elementary School overnight, making off with computers and money and leaving graffiti behind, police and school officials said this morning.
Douglas O'Dell, principal of Wellborn Elementary School, said staff arriving early this morning discovered the break-in. Police and staff searched the building, but found no one inside.
Anniston police Lt. Fred Forsythe said the burglar got into the school by forcing open a hatch on the roof. Forsythe said several laptop computers and money totaling less than $100 were stolen from the school.
Forsythe said the burglar broke into offices and several classrooms. Profanity was discovered written on a dry-erase board in one of the classrooms, the lieutenant said.
O'Dell said students entering the school this morning were re-routed through the gym on their way to eat breakfast in the cafeteria while Anniston police processed several classrooms and the main office.
"There was no imminent threat to students or staff," O'Dell said.
Police are still investigating the incident and are already working on a few leads, Forsythe said.
The principal said Wellborn elementary is "trying to have a normal school day" while cooperating with police during their investigation.
"We're in the process of reviewing security cameras and trying to identify the suspect," O'Dell said.
Police are asking anyone with information on the burglary to call the Investigative Division at 256-240-4000.
