EDITORIAL: Volunteers needed to serve, enrich lives
Jan 30, 2013 (St. Joseph News-Press - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- To be hungry and dependent on the generosity of others for your next meal -- this is when the dignity of those who walk among us is at risk.
It's not enough to ask, "What would we do if no one stepped forward to feed the hungry " Rather, we must ask, "What would become of those who are hungry " We are proud of the long-standing outreach of the Open Door Food Kitchen, which provides a meal every day to individuals and families in need of nourishment, fellowship and the options in life that are possible only when the necessities are secured.
We also take satisfaction in knowing Second Harvest Community Food Bank makes a huge impact throughout the region by supporting local food pantries and initiatives such as Backpack Buddies and the new Fresh Start market.
But these good feelings are tempered by the realization "food insecurity" is not going away anytime soon and these outreach services require constant infusions of new volunteers and financial supporters.
Right now, the Food Kitchen is trying to fill slots on its calendar. It is seeking individuals, families or organizations who can take a turn providing a meal to the roughly 200 people who are served each day.
This opportunity may be particularly well suited to a civic group or workplace colleagues who want to be a part of making a difference in our community. For more information or to volunteer, call 364-1085.
Meanwhile, the nonprofit Fresh Start market is recruiting for the estimated 50 volunteers who are needed each week to staff the store's extended hours and new services. To volunteer, call 364-3663.
Together, willing volunteers can sustain these vital programs.
