BRIEF: Sprinkler malfunction floods Milwaukee City Hall basement
Jan 22, 2013 (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A frozen sprinkler head on an outer wall in the basement of City Hall burst Tuesday morning, and an estimated 3 to 4 inches of water that filled the area damaged some of the city's information technology mechanical systems.
The sprinkler head burst about 11 a.m. and immediately set off an evacuation alarm. However, no evacuation was necessary, according to spokeswoman Jodie Tabak of the mayor's office and Sandy Rusch Walton of the city's Department of Public Works.
The damaged area is in the basement on the south end of the historic building. Desktop computers in City Hall lost access to the Internet, but work crews are still assessing whether there is any additional damage.
The water damage briefly closed the tunnel that connects City Hall with the Zeidler Municipal Building and another city building at 809 N. Broadway. That tunnel has since reopened.
