BRIEF: Expanded Greensboro recycling program starts Jan. 1
GREENSBORO, Jan 04, 2013 (News & Record - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Greensboro residents will be able to put additional items in their brown recycling cans starting Jan. 1.
New items that the city will accept are: --All plastics No. 1 through No. 7; this includes yogurt and dairy containers --Pizza boxes --Milk and juice cartons --Pots and pans The city currently accepts plastic bottles and jugs, glass jars and bottles, all aluminum, tin and steel cans, newspapers, magazines, junk mail, office/school/computer paper, cardboard, chipboard and hard plastics.
The change is part of a new 5-year contract with ReCommunity, the company that handles Greensboro's recyclables.
The city said residents recycled 28,500 tons of materials this year but threw away more than 10,000 tons of items that could have been recycled.
