County council members take oaths
NEWBERRY, Jan 04, 2013 (The Newberry Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Newberry County Council got its year started on Wednesday with a short meeting that saw four members sworn in and the elections of a chair and vice chair.
Scott Cain was sworn in to his first term on council and was welcomed by all.
Cain said there are a lot of bright things on the horizon this year and added in addition to himself that a new mayor and council members are also being sworn in to serve the Whitmire area.
"I look forward to the next year," said Cain thanking the people of District One for putting their trust in him.
He said the people in the district take pride in their county and love the land and people.
Cain said the people also have respect for outgoing councilman Edgar Baker and that Baker earned it and did not get it through his position.
Also taking the oath of office for another term were councilmen Steve Stockman, Kirksey Koon and Les Hipp.
In speedy form, Buddy Livingston was re-elected as the chair of the council and Koon as the vice-chair.
The council then held a public hearing and gave second reading to ratify an existing multi-county park agreement with Greenwood County. The multi-park agreements allow industries to get extra incentives.
Another third reading and public hearing was giving to rezone land near Mid-Carolina High School from rural to single family residential. The 10 acres located at Cy Schumpert Road between U.S. highways 76 and 773 will be used for a housing development.
Also a third reading and another public hearing was held to rezone about 25 acres for the future expansion of the Louis Rich- Kraft Foods plant on Louis Rich Road.
The council then approved to continue to meet on the first and third Wednesdays of each month at 7 p.m.
Within less than 15 minutes the council adjourned their first meeting of the year with the promise to Cain that most meetings would not be so short.
