Blockbuster video store in Clarks Summit to close in January
Dec 28, 2012 (The Times-Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- SOUTH ABINGTON TWP. -- One of the two remaining Blockbuster video stores in Lackawanna County will close at the end of January.
Employees hung up a yellow "store closing" sign on the outside of the Blockbuster video store at 1141 Northern Blvd. in South Abington Twp. on Wednesday.
On Thursday, a Blockbuster spokeswoman said the store is scheduled to close Jan. 20. It opened in December 1995.
"The lease for this location expired at the end of November, and that is the reason we're closing this location," spokeswoman Stephanie Kopet said in an email. "Employees will be offered a position based on their desire to relocate and position availability at the other stores in the area." The video store at 395 Meridian Ave. in Scranton will be the lone Blockbuster remaining in Lackawanna County, according to the Blockbuster website, The next closest, Ms. Kopet said, is located at 2268 Sans Souci Parkway in Hanover Twp., in Luzerne County.
"It doesn't really surprise me," Township Manager David O'Neill said. "Those types of businesses have been going out all over the area. This one actually held on for quite awhile." Calls to Northeastern Realty Partners, the owner of the building according to the Lackawanna County assessor's office, were not returned.
Mr. O'Neill said he doesn't think it will be long before that building is occupied.
"I am sure they will have someone in there pretty quickly because of its excellent location," he said.
Despite the dwindling number of video stores, there are several Blockbuster kiosks scattered throughout the county, including the one outside the Sheetz at 1109 Northern Blvd., down the street from the video store.
