Egypt : WHOLESALE SERVICES MARKET to be launched in EGYPT [TendersInfo (India)]
(TendersInfo (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Allowing fixed and mobile operators to offer new services, the launch of a wholesale services market has been approved in Egypt.
In a bid to unify the licensing regime, the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRAI) said that current fixed-line operator Telecom Egypt will be provided with a mobile services licence by mid-2013. The carrier will not be offered any spectrum; instead it will have to negotiate wholesale access on one of the existing three mobile networks.
Additionally, the company will be required to open up its fixed-line infrastructure for other operators to provide retail services. Telecom operators will be allowed to obtain fixed service licences, while the regulator concludes the process of issuing unified service licences.
The authority said the reshuffling process is in line with global trends of reducing use of fixed-line services in favour of mobile, and should support enhanced competition in the industry.
