Texas A&M System regents honor Nancy Dickey for leadership at HSC
Dec 12, 2012 (The Eagle - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- At a special meeting of the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents on Tuesday, a resolution was adopted honoring Dr. Nancy Dickey, who resigned as president of the Texas A&M Health Science Center and vice chancellor for health affairs in October.
Her resignation on Oct. 9 was prompted by the university system's decision to shift control of the health science center from the system to Texas A&M University, Dickey said in a press release.
Dickey will return to the faculty in the Department of Family and Community Medicine in the College of Medicine, said Steve Moore, vice chancellor of marketing and communications for the system.
Dickey became president of the TAMHSC in January 2002 and is credited for growing the institution from four to six colleges, adding three campuses, and doubling enrollment from 880 to 2,100 students.
Before coming to A&M Dickey was the first woman president of the American Medical Association and was elected to the Institute of Medicine in 2007, and the Texas Women's Hall of Fame in 2010.
She has received numerous honors and recognitions, including six doctorate degrees in science and law.
"Dr. Dickey instills a strong sense of interprofessionalism among faculty, staff and students and serves as an exceptional mentor and teacher," the resolution states. "And despite a full schedule, Dr. Dickey continues to practice medicine and see patients, exemplifying the mission of the Health Science Center." Dickey was granted development leave Tuesday by the board of regents, effective Tuesday through Nov. 15, 2013, Moore said.
Moore did not release details of the leave, but confirmed that Dickey will retain her current salary during its duration.
According to The Texas Tribune, Dickey's annual salary is $526,000.
