BEIJING, Nov 22, 2012 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) -- China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd. (NYSE: CHU, SEHK: 0762, and SHSE: 600050) is brewing to set up a cloud computing company.

An insider disclosed today that the move aimed to better adapt to user demand in the cloud computing era and to promote the accelerated strategic transformation of the company. It is revealed that the company had founded a preparatory group at present, with Jiao Gang, general manager of China Unicom Hainan branch, acting as the group leader.

However, the insider did not disclose the specific organizational structure and business planning for the oncoming cloud computing company. Previously, China Telecom Corporation Limited (SEHK: 0728 and NYSE:CHA) has established an independent cloud computing company that is designated to be an internet company combining marketing, operation and product R&D as a whole. The main business of China Telecom's cloud computing company includes IDC, CDN and cloud host and cloud storage service derived from cloud computing and IT infrastructures.

Virtualization has taken the IT world by storm but to date the comms market has been mostly unaffected – relying instead on proprietary appliances for numerous functions. A recent industry push to establish network standards virtualization will potentially shake-up the telecommunications market even more than the move to IP communications. As network hardware begins to be released as software, carriers are expected to save money and benefit greatly from new levels of flexibility related to hosting their network in private and virtual private clouds.
