Mom, 5 children hurt in Lansford as van plows into parked cars
Nov 16, 2012 (The Morning Call (Allentown - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A Coaldale woman apparently stricken by an illness drove a van into three parked vehicles in Lansford on Thursday afternoon, injuring herself and her five children, authorities said.
Medical helicopters were called to fly Laura DeMaio, 29, and her 10-year-old son to the Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest trauma center. Her other children were taken by ambulance and private cars to Gnaden Huetten Hospital.
Lansford police Sgt. Jack Soberick said DeMaio's 10-year-old son seemed to have the worst of the injuries.
"He was the right front passenger," Soberick said. "He took the force of the crash. He was belted, but he does have head and face injuries." Police speculated that Laura DeMaio suffered a blackout or a seizure around 5:40 p.m. as she drove east in the 800 block of Patterson Street.
Her van first hit a sport utility vehicle, but bounced away before running into a car, pushing it over the curb and into a building, Soberick said. Then the van plowed into a second car and stopped after the car lurched onto the sidewalk.
The van and the two cars were demolished in the collisions, police said. The SUV had moderate damage. No one other than DeMaio's family was hurt.
Patterson Street, Route 209, was shut down for an hour while the accident scene was cleaned up and police investigated.
