Supervisors replace Sawyer on port commission
Nov 14, 2012 (The Sun Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Harrison County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to replace Lenny Sawyer on the Board of Commissioners of the Port of Gulfport.
Supervisors appointed Bobby Knesal, an engineer, to replace Sawyer, who said he has served on the board for 15 years.
"It was not a reflection on Lenny," said Kim Savant, president of the Board of Supervisors. "He did a great job, but we just decided we needed a fresh perspective, a fresh set of eyes." There has been controversy in recent months over the port's plan to expand and the use of the federal money it received after Hurricane Katrina.
Sawyer said he was glad to serve on the board and that he understands the supervisors' decision.
"I thank the Board of Supervisors for appointing me and allowing me to serve," he said Tuesday. "I would never have had that opportunity if they hadn't appointed me. I'm very honored that the supervisors allowed me to serve." Sawyer said his term expires Dec. 1, but Savant said according to county records, his term ended in April.
Sawyer is president of the Board of Commissioners, and Jim Simpson will become president at the December meeting.
Knesal is regional vice president of Utility Partners, a company that manages public works departments for cities in 15 states across the U.S.
"I think it's going to be a challenge, and I'm looking forward to it," he said of his appointment.
