Ineligible player forces Northwest forfeit
Nov 13, 2012 (The Citizens' Voice - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Northwest has been forced to forfeit its Eastern Conference first-round victory last Friday night over Muncy due to using an ineligible player.
As a result, the Rangers are unable to compete this week and the championship game with Schuylkill Haven has been cancelled and Schuylkill Haven is the EC Class A champion.
The Rangers had to forfeit their 42-21 win over Muncy because a player who was ejected in a Week 10 game against Montrose played against Muncy.
PIAA rules state that if a player is ejected from competition he/she is ineligible for the next game.
"They used an ineligible player who was disqualified from the previous week," District 2 chairman Frank Majikes said. "He was ejected in the Montrose game and should not have been able to play against Muncy. Northwest was told by the game (Montrose) officials the kid was ejected. That was confirmed with me (Monday) in a conversation I had with the game officials." Northwest was not originally in the Eastern Conference playoffs but received the wild-card berth after Sayre rejected its spot in the tournament.
Muncy entered the tournament as the top seed.
Phone calls to Muncy were placed Monday to inform the school of the situation but Muncy is not able to play because the coaching staff collected all its equipment and it is set to be sent out today to be reconditioned.
Bob Gimble, the secretary/treasurer for the Eastern Conference, was the game coordinator for Northwest's game at Muncy and said he went to Northwest coach Carl Majer to confirm there was an ejection the previous week.
Gimble said he received a copy of the paperwork filed on the player's ejection.
As a result, Northwest will finish the season 5-6. Majikes also said that Northwest officials will be brought in front of the District 2 committee at a future date to discuss the issue.
