BRIEF: Foxconn denies manufacturing plans in U.S.
Nov 09, 2012 (Detroit Free Press - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Foxconn Technology Group, the giant Taiwanese contract electronics manufacturer that makes the iPhone and iPad, has denied an online report that it plans to establish a manufacturing plant in the U.S. and is evaluating Detroit as a possible site.
"Foxconn Technology Group already has multiple facilities based in the U.S. and there are no current plans to expand our operations there at this time," Yvonne Tung, a company spokeswoman, said in an email to the Free Press.
She said Foxconn is considering providing opportunities for U.S. engineers to visit the company's facilities in China as part of a technical exchange.
Digitimes, a Web site covering the supply side of the semiconductor, electronics, computer and communications industries, reported Thursday that Foxconn was planning to make LCD televisions in the U.S. and was conducting evaluations in cities such as Detroit and Los Angeles. The report was based on unnamed sources.
Foxconn has come under scrutiny this year for its labor practices and the working conditions at its plants.
