Heaton on top in District 46 State Rep. race
Nov 07, 2012 (Herald-Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Republican Bob Heaton, a financial adviser who was a college basketball teammate of Larry Bird at Indiana State University, opened a comfortable lead on high school government teacher James Mann in voting Tuesday for state representative in District 46.
Both men are from Terre Haute; District 46 stretches from eastern Vigo County to northwestern Monroe County.
Heaton was running ahead of Mann most of the night in unofficial tallies reported by media outlets. The Associated Press count at 10 p.m. had Heaton ahead 58 percent to 42 percent, with 92 percent of the vote reported.
Heaton also was leading in the 11 Monroe County precincts that are part of District 46, according to unofficial results reported by the Monroe County Clerk's office. With 100 percent of the Election Day vote counted in Monroe County, Heaton was leading with 1,708 votes, compared to 1,315 votes for Mann. Those numbers did not include Monroe County early and absentee ballots cast in that race.
Reached by telephone, Heaton said he was humbled by the voters' apparent decision to return him to the Statehouse. He said Mann had called him to concede even before getting the final numbers from Monroe County.
"I'm looking forward to working with the good people of Monroe and working with the other representatives there to get things done for that region," Heaton said. "I'm looking forward to another session at the Statehouse." Heaton campaigned as a fiscal conservative, saying his top priority in the Legislature would be to create the best business climate in Indiana. He also said he wanted to improve career and technical education in Indiana high schools and address early childhood education.
Steele unopposed Republican Brent Steele breezed to a third term Tuesday in Indiana Senate District 47. Steele was unopposed in the election. The district includes Lawrence County and five precincts in the southern portion of Monroe County. Steele collected all 1,519 Monroe County votes so far counted in that race.
