Markey Statement on Google Privacy Policy Changes

Jan 25, 2012 (Congressional Documents and Publications/ContentWorks via COMTEX) -- WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and former chairman of the Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet, issued the following statement after Google announced plans to require users to allow the company to follow their activities across email, social networking, and other services.

"Google's plan to change its privacy policy raises important questions about how much control Google users will have over their personal information. While it is undetermined at this point how the policy will impact specific Google services, it is imperative that users will be able to decide whether they want their information shared across the spectrum of Google's offerings. As the company continues to flesh out its plans, I look forward to evaluating the changes to ensure consumers' privacy is protected."
