Emcore Recognizes Anniversary of Shootings [Albuquerque Journal, N.M.]

(Albuquerque Journal (NM) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) July 09--Emcore Corp. rebounded from last summer's deadly shooting tragedy with a banner business year, but it's not forgetting the victims or the hundreds of their co-workers who had to deal with the emotional wounds that followed.

The company will observe a moment of silence on Tuesday to mark the first anniversary of the incident, with a floral arrangement to be placed in a memorial garden created outside Building 2 near the scene of the shooting. No public event is planned.

Emcore also announced the creation of a website, emcorememorial.com, devoted to the memory of those who died and recognizing Emcore workers credited with actions that helped saved lives. It give both employees and the community a forum to reflect and comment on the event.

On the morning of July 12, 2010, former Emcore employee Robert Reza shot six people inside and outside the complex in the Sandia Science and Technology Park, killing employees Michele Turner and Sharon Cunningham, and wounding four others, including his ex-girlfriend. The gunman then killed himself. About 350 other employees were evacuated in the frantic aftermath.

In an interview Friday, Emcore Chief Executive Officer Hong Hou said the recovery has been a long, difficult one that continues for employees.

"It is going to take some time... It was a pretty traumatic day," Hou said.

He said he is proud of the fact that no employee left the company because of the incident.

"The silver lining of this tragedy is that it is really giving employees an opportunity to rethink and reprioritize what is important," he said.

Business for the company, a maker of components for fiber optic and solar power markets, including generation panels for communications satellites, shot upward in the past year, Hou said.

"Our employee base has grown from about 350 people about a year ago to right now about 450 in Albuquerque," he said, adding that the company's revenue and profitability reached a record level. Emcore reported revenues of $191.2 million in 2010 with worldwide employment of 900, according to this year's listing in New Mexico's Flying 40.

"I think the general mood of the employees is they are very proud to be a member of this family," Hou said.
