Zebra Technologies now a part of Navis STAR Technology Alliance

Jun 20, 2011 (M2 EQUITYBITES via COMTEX) -- Navis, a part of Cargotec Corporation (NasdaqOMX: CGCBV) and the global technology standard for managing the movement of cargo through terminals, announced on Friday that Zebra Technologies Corporation (Nasadq: ZBRA) is now a part of the Navis Star Technology Alliance.

Zebra Technologies, a provider of bar code, kiosk, card and RFID printers as well as real-time location solutions, joins the Navis Star Technology Alliance after divesting Navis in early 2011.

Now, Navis can exclusively provide Zebra's WhereNet hardware solutions to the marine terminal market. Together, Navis and Zebra are already providing WhereNet radio frequency identification (RFID) tags for use in the Los Angeles Long Beach Clean Truck Programme, where more than 15,000 trucks are tagged in order to gain access to the ports and terminals and ensure environmental compliance. Also, the alliance will allow Navis to develop fully integrated solutions utilising Zebra's WhereNet hardware, Wheretags, Whereport and middleware for use in marine ports and terminals.

In addition to Zebra Technologies, the Navis Star Technology Alliance also includes third-party technology vendors APS Technology Group, Symeo GmbH and arl-shipping.com.

Virtualization has taken the IT world by storm but to date the comms market has been mostly unaffected – relying instead on proprietary appliances for numerous functions. A recent industry push to establish network standards virtualization will potentially shake-up the telecommunications market even more than the move to IP communications. As network hardware begins to be released as software, carriers are expected to save money and benefit greatly from new levels of flexibility related to hosting their network in private and virtual private clouds.
