BRIEF: 4-H robotics club starts with grant

WENATCHEE, Oct 14, 2010 (The Wenatchee World - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Chelan-Douglas 4-H is recruiting middle and high school students for a regional robotics club, thanks to a $50,000 grant from National 4-H Council and JC Penney.

The Washington State University Extension office, 400 Washington St., will host an information night at 7 p.m. Oct. 28.

"Primarily, robotics is the vehicle to teach them life skills and science, how to market ideas and leadership," said Janet Edwards, an afterschool specialist with WSU Extension 4-H. The idea stems from a need for more students to pursue math and science.

Washington was one of five states chosen for the grant. The $50,000 will be split among 10 areas around the state, including $3,500 for Chelan-Douglas 4-H.

The club will compete with their robots in a state competition in March in Seattle. In addition to the grant, JC Penney also donated $6,500 for each club, which will pay for robot-building kits and registration fees.

Virtualization has taken the IT world by storm but to date the comms market has been mostly unaffected – relying instead on proprietary appliances for numerous functions. A recent industry push to establish network standards virtualization will potentially shake-up the telecommunications market even more than the move to IP communications. As network hardware begins to be released as software, carriers are expected to save money and benefit greatly from new levels of flexibility related to hosting their network in private and virtual private clouds.
