Italy keen on Indian food retailing sector
(Financial Express Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)A sea change in the Indian retail sector has got the attention of the Italian food processing and packaging industry. Representatives of several conglomerates from the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy are now in India- in Hyderabad, Mumbai and Kolkata. An organised retail sector that sells both fresh and packaged processed foods according to standards "comparable to the best in Europe" is what brought them to India. "There has been a complete transformation of the food retailing sector in India over the last three years. Our experience in cities like Mumbai shows that in India the quality and standards of processing and packaging of food is comparable to, if not better than, that in Europe," said Christian Mori, representing Sorma SPA, which produces specialised containers for processed foods. Sorma SPA is also part of the Mediterranean Fruit Company, a conglomerate of 27 companies that provides end-to-end solutions from farming to packaging to logistics in the Mediterranean region.Apart from Sorma, representatives of the MFC, the Forli-Cesena Chamber of Commerce, and the Cermac Consortium, representing 25 companies providing agricultural machinery, are also part of the delegation.
