GlobeNet's New Virtualization Service Takes Work on the Road

By Steve Anderson March 15, 2016

Virtualization can be a big step forward when it comes to managing operations remotely. Virtualization can be put to work on a variety of tasks, from network functions to office tools, and GlobeNet—a well-known provider of data network services throughout North America and into Latin America—recently started its own virtualization service to help drive remote operations.

GlobeNet's new virtualization system is geared toward supporting the expansion of networks by offering connection at what are called Points of Presence (PoPs) throughout the Americas. Located in places like New York, Miami, Rio de Janeiro, Bogota and Caracas, the GlobeNet virtualization service provides network infrastructure using virtual routers to allow for an aggregation of overall capacity. The routers are used as part of a larger network for service delivery, and includes transport services as well.

The virtualization system itself, meanwhile, includes both network architecture and capacity upgrades managed by the customer, as well as a slate of basic engineering services including peering connection monitoring and network monitoring with an eye toward catching problems before these become too big a disruption. Capacity, meanwhile, is scalable to grow with the network's demands, and can be upgraded accordingly. Router configurations are available with either Nx1 Gig ports or Nx10 Gig ports for just the right fit, and a software defined networking (SDN)-ready MX960 3D Universal Edge Router helps provide further performance benefit.

GlobeNet's chief operating officer and president, Erick W. Contag, offered comment “Carriers and ISPs need to present additional value to their customers in order to stand out in the competitive global telecommunications market. Virtualization enhances any customer network by expanding it to critical global PoPs without having to invest in the deployment of a subsea fiber system or purchase expensive equipment.”

Virtualization is delivering a lot of benefit these days, and more businesses are picking up on that. Being able to conduct operations remotely while still having the necessary tools and connectivity in play to do so is a huge plus in many firms, and virtualization provides the backbone to carry out such operations. The monitoring GlobeNet does will also be important here, as all of these functions depend on a network operating at peak performance and capacity to have any real impact. A substandard network operation would end up being more irritation than advancement, and GlobeNet's clear commitment to monitoring should prove helpful here.

Getting behind the value of virtualization can be a big part of growing a company's bottom line these days, and it's tools like GlobeNet's that will represent one of the best ways to make virtualization happen.
