Telco Systems Launches NFV CyberGuard

By Casey Houser October 15, 2015

Telco Systems, a developer of software-defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) software, recently announced the launch of NFV CyberGuard, a set of network sensors that collaborate with other Telco Systems products that, together, address many security vulnerabilities associated with software-based networking.

Traditional networking relies on a closed infrastructure that depends on mature security hardware and software that can keep business data secure within those walls. However, with SDN and NFV so new to the scene, that maturity does not yet exist, so hacking attempts and malware intrusions can succeed at a potentially-higher rate. NFV CyberGuard takes these types of networks into account by using the Telco Systems CloudMetro virtualization platform, a big data analytics engine and SDN controller, that all operates atop the company’s EdgeGenie Orchestrator, a complete networking management tool meant to handle all aspects of development.

Ariel Efrati, the CEO of Telco Systems, commented on the company announcement about the advantages and risks of deploying virtual networks:

“The benefits of SDN and NFV are clear, although at the same time, the security risks associated with these technologies also need to be addressed,” Efrati said. “We are proud to be applying a unique usage of our new NFV innovations in our new cyber-protection solution to address the security vulnerabilities enabled by these two technologies.

Businesses will use CyberGuard as a network function which sits at the edge of a network and monitors all applications on the network and then collects that information into a database of expected network behavior. From there, its analytics engine can determine which behaviors are not normal and alert users to issues such as denial of service or spoofing attacks.

This can allow businesses to gain complete visibility of their entire networks. The product can train itself to detect threats and then allow IT admins and staff to provide manual assistance in treating such problems.

Businesses can also use the vCyberGuard security-as-a-solution tool to resell to their own customers. Deployed in the cloud, vCyberGuard can offer the same protection to businesses’ clients that the base CyberGuard offers individual clients that sign up for the service on their own terms.
