Sonus Networks Adds SDN in Release 8.0 of VellOS Cloud Exchange Networking Platform

By Laura Stotler October 15, 2015

Sonus Networks has updated its virtualized cloud exchange networking platform with a Software Defined Networking (SDN) solution. The company announced VellOS Release 8.0 is now available, making it easy for service providers to roll out new cloud services as well as migrate existing applications to the cloud.

The new release offers Network-as-a-Service (NaaS), enabling service providers to take advantage of centralized management and flexibility when allocating network resources. VellOS integrates private, hybrid and public clouds into a central environment that lets service providers tailor their cloud exchange networking services. Providers may easily deliver NaaS, MPLS WAN replacement and cloud interconnect services to public cloud providers through the platform.

"VellOS drives improvements in network utilization, resulting in reduced network costs and associated capital expenditures for customers moving mission critical business applications to the Cloud," said Tony Scarfo, executive vice president, product management and corporate development, Sonus.  "VellOS increases productivity and revenue through business-driven networking versus being bound by traditional networking methodologies."

VellOS features an analytics tool enabling network and application performance monitoring through a series of metrics. This lets service providers pass along valuable insights to their enterprise customers about network, computation and application interactions. The platform also includes a new web-based customer portal so that service providers may sell to existing customers and on-board new customers easily. The customizable, multi-tenant portal offers tiered service selection as well as bandwidth on-demand options.

Sonus has also been active in the WebRTC space and earlier this month released its Sonus WebRTC Servces Solution along with SBC Release 5.0 with WebRTC capabilities. The offering includes a WebRTC Gateway with embedded JavaScript applications in the browser for easily setting up WebRTC sessions. Sonus also offers a WebRTC SDK with JavaScript libraries and APIs supporting media streaming, peer connection and data channels for voice, video conferencing and other types of collaboration.
