6WIND Takes Home a 2013 Excellent in SDN Award

By Rory Lidstone October 21, 2013

Packet processing software provider 6WIND has been named a winner of the 2013 Excellence in SDN Award, presented by TMC’s Internet Telephony Magazine and SDN Zone. The company’s SDN architecture, 6WINDGate, was a factor in this award win as it has had a “profound impact on the IT and telecom industries” and continues to grow in popularity.

The Excellence in SDN Award recognizes companies in five categories: Most Disruptive Awards, NFV (network function virtualization) Vendor Awards, SDN Application Provider Awards, SDN Upstart Awards and SDN Network Visualization Awards.

“We are honored to receive the 2013 Excellence in SDN Award,” said Eric Carmès, CEO of 6WIND, in a statement. “The 6WINDGate networking software has already been adopted by many tier-one Telecom Equipment Manufacturers (TEMs) and is deployed in commercial service provider networks worldwide. TEMs and service providers have achieved significant OPEX and CAPEX improvements through adopting 6WINDGate, which solves critical performance challenges for traditional physical networking equipment, for virtual switching and also for emerging SDN and NFV solutions being deployed to improve network flexibility and resource utilization.”

Receiving the Excellence in SDN Award is yet another major occurrence in an already eventful 2013 for 6WIND. In fact, the last couple of months have held some significant moments for the company.

For example, in September, 6WIND introduced support for the Intel Open Network Platform in 6WINDGate. As such, the software is now able to solve critical performance and scalability challenges for virtual switches running on the Intel switch reference design. More recently, 6WIND began using Ixia’s network testing and security solutions to benchmark its own networking solutions, ensuring optimal performance over software defined networks.

As an Excellent in SDN Award recipient, however, 6WIND has received validation for its hard work throughout the last year. According to TMC CEO Rich Tehrani, 6WIND’s demonstrated innovation was a major factor leading to this recognition.
